Do Memory Supplements Work? What the Studies Say

Quick answer

Do memory supplements work? For most healthy adults, the evidence is thin or mixed. The largest ginkgo trial found no drop in dementia, and small trials of bacopa and phosphatidylserine show modest, uneven gains. MemoPryl itself has not been tested in a trial. Sleep, activity and a doctor visit have firmer backing.

The short answer01

Do memory supplements work for healthy adults?

Mostly the evidence is inconclusive. NIH reviews call it limited or inconsistent for ginkgo, omega-3, vitamin E and B vitamins, and ask for larger, longer trials (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition).

A National Academies panel found only "encouraging although inconclusive" support for activity, blood pressure control and cognitive training, and found "insufficient evidence" for the one supplement pair it named, B12 with folic acid (National Academies 2017 report).

No supplement has earned a firm recommendation for memory in healthy people.

Next step: if memory worries you, book a visit. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you add a capsule.

Ingredient by ingredient02

What did the trials find for each MemoPryl-linked ingredient?

Six names are tied to MemoPryl through a sibling pack. Four have memory studies, one is a mood herb, and one has no memory trial at all. None has a printed amount on the bottle photos.

Evidence for the six names linked to MemoPryl
IngredientWhat was studiedWhat was found
Ginkgo biloba120 mg twice a day, 3,069 adults aged 75 or older, about 6 yearsNo lower dementia or Alzheimer's rate than placebo (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA)
Bacopa (brahmi)Extract for at least 12 weeks, nine trials pooledMay speed attention; liver database says not shown effective for any disease (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
Phosphatidylserine100 or 300 mg a day for six months, 78 adultsGains only in people with lower starting scores (Kato-Kataoka 2010, soy PS trial)
Acetyl-L-carnitine1 to 3 g a day for 12 to 52 weeks in dementiaNo effect on severity; routine use not justified (NIH ODS, Carnitine)
St. John's wortStudied for low mood, not memoryNo memory benefit shown (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth)
L-glutamineNo memory trial citedNot described as a memory supplement (MSK, Glutamine)

All six are unconfirmed for the bottle you receive.

The biggest trial03

What did the large ginkgo trial actually show?

It showed no benefit for preventing dementia. The GEM trial gave 3,069 volunteers aged 75 or older either 120 mg of ginkgo extract twice a day or a placebo, and followed them for a median of 6.1 years (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).

The authors concluded that the dose did not lower the overall rate of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

A 2009 Cochrane review showed an early gain, but it leaned on two studies. With them removed, the effect shrank to almost nothing (Cochrane 2009, ginkgo and dementia). One bright result, then a fade, is a common pattern.

Ginkgo carries a bleeding caution.

It may raise bleeding risk with warfarin, aspirin and other blood thinners (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements). Ask your pharmacist before you combine them.

Amounts04

How do the studied amounts compare with a MemoPryl capsule?

They cannot be compared. No image of the bottle shows a milligram amount, so we do not know whether a capsule holds more or less than a study used.

The dashed bar is the MemoPryl amount nobody has published. Follow the directions on your bottle, not a chart.

  • Phosphatidylserine

Gold bars: daily amounts used in human studies; the light part shows the range. The dashed bar is empty because no bottle image prints an amount. No study has tested MemoPryl itself.

Reading studies05

Why do small supplement studies keep disagreeing?

Small trials swing widely, and a placebo can lift scores by itself. In the phosphatidylserine trial, scores rose in every group (Kato-Kataoka 2010, soy PS trial).

Across all 78 people, one memory test showed no gap between capsule and placebo. A subgroup result is a lead, not a verdict.

  1. Check the size

    Dozens of people can mislead.

  2. Check the length

    Memory shifts slowly.

  3. Check the control

A placebo group shows what would have happened anyway.

Claims vs findings06

How do common label claims stack up against the research?

Label words such as focus, clarity and brain energy are structure and function claims. FDA does not review them before sale (FDA, Structure/Function Claims).

A claim can sit on a bottle for years with no trial behind it. Nine common claims sit beside the research below.

  1. Label A“Optimized Memory*”No trial has tested MemoPryl. In the 3,069-person GEM trial, ginkgo did not lower dementia rates versus placebo; NCCIH calls the evidence for most supplements inconclusive. (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition)
  2. Label A“Improves Mental Clarity*”'Improves' is a strong verb for a structure/function claim. Bacopa trials of 12 weeks or more reported faster attention in a meta-analysis, at 300 mg or more of extract, an amount no bottle image prints. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
  3. Label A“Supports Focus*”St. John's wort is studied for mood, not focus, and glutamine has no memory trial. No bottle image prints an amount of any ingredient. (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth) (MSK, Glutamine)
  4. Label B“Supports Concentration*”Ingredient-level evidence at doses this site cannot see. Health claims generally need randomized human testing of the product itself. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
  5. Label B“Supports Brain Energy*”'Brain energy' is not a medical measure. A Cochrane review of acetyl-L-carnitine in dementia found no effect on severity. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Pennisi 2020, ALC in dementia)
  6. Label B“Supports Productivity*”Productivity is not something supplement trials measure. The FTC says personal stories are never enough to back a health claim. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
  7. Both labelsThe FDA asteriskStructure/function wording is allowed with the FDA disclaimer. It is not FDA approval and not a disease claim. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims)
  8. Badges“Doctor formulated”, “GMP certified”, “FDA registered”No doctor, certifier or audit is named. FDA registers facilities; it does not approve them or the supplement. (FDA, Hidden Ingredients) (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements)
  9. Bottle30 capsules and Cognitive Support, or 60 capsules and Advanced FormulaThe two bottle images in the brand set disagree. Only the bottle you receive settles it.

Claims as printed on the two bottle images. Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Guidance).

What has firmer backing07

What does the research back more strongly than a capsule?

Moving more, sleeping well, controlling blood pressure and eating a balanced diet. All have better support than any memory capsule.

CDC says short bursts of activity can boost memory and thinking skills (CDC, Physical Activity and Brain). HHS advises adults to get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week (HHS, Physical Activity Guidelines). NIA says older adults need seven to nine hours of sleep, and that sleep helps store memories (NIA, Sleep and Older Adults).

A Mediterranean-style diet was linked to lower risk of cognitive decline in one large study of older Americans (AAIC 2017, diet and cognition).

The product itself08

Has MemoPryl itself been tested?

No published trial tests MemoPryl. Any benefit you read about is borrowed from studies on single ingredients at amounts we cannot match to the bottle.

FAQ09

Questions about the research

Did ginkgo help memory in studies?

Not in the largest one. The GEM trial of 3,069 adults aged 75 or older found no difference in dementia cases between ginkgo and placebo (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA). NCCIH says whether ginkgo helps healthy people is uncertain (NCCIH, Ginkgo). It may also raise bleeding risk.

Is bacopa backed by research?

Partly. A pooled analysis of trials lasting at least 12 weeks found it may speed attention (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.). NIH's liver database says it is not shown effective for any disease in adequate trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).

What does a placebo-controlled trial mean?

Volunteers are randomly given the real product or a look-alike with nothing active, and nobody knows which. Comparing the two groups shows what the product adds beyond expectation.

Why did people improve in the placebo group?

Expectations, practice effects and normal ups and downs can all lift test scores. In the phosphatidylserine trial, scores rose in every group (Kato-Kataoka 2010, soy PS trial). A control group shows what would have happened anyway.

Can any supplement lower my Alzheimer's risk?

No supplement has been shown to. The National Academies found insufficient evidence for the one supplement pair it named (National Academies 2017 report), and the ginkgo trial found no effect on Alzheimer's rates (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA). Talk with a doctor about proven steps such as blood pressure control.

What does research say works better than a pill for memory?

Regular activity, enough sleep, blood pressure control and a balanced diet have firmer backing than capsules (National Academies 2017 report) (CDC, Physical Activity and Brain) (NIA, Sleep and Older Adults). None is a quick fix, but each is low risk and worth raising with your doctor.

Has MemoPryl been tested in a human trial?

No published trial tests MemoPryl. Studies exist for some named ingredients, but the bottle amounts are not printed, so they cannot be matched. Treat label claims as untested.
