Bacopa (brahmi) in MemoPryl: what the trials show
Bacopa monnieri, sold as brahmi, is one of six ingredient names the seller's notes tie to a sibling MemoPryl pack. No image we have confirms it or its amount for your bottle. Trials of 12 weeks or more suggest it may speed attention, but proof is thin. Ask your pharmacist if you take any medicine.

What is Bacopa monnieri, and is it in my bottle?
Bacopa monnieri is a marsh herb used in Ayurvedic medicine and sold as brahmi. The seller's notes name it for a sibling MemoPryl pack, so confirm it on your own bottle.
No bottle image we have shows a Supplement Facts panel. We cannot say whether your capsules hold bacopa or how much. The bottle you receive is the source of truth.
One name trap matters. LiverTox notes that "Brahmi" is also used for gotu kola, a different plant (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). If a label says only brahmi, look for the Latin name next to it.
Check: find "Bacopa monnieri" on the panel, and whether it says extract and what part of the plant.
| Name in the seller's notes | Brahmi / Bacopa monnieri |
|---|---|
| What it is | An Ayurvedic marsh herb, sold as brahmi |
| On the bottle? | Unconfirmed: named in the seller's product notes from a sibling pack; no Supplement Facts panel was supplied |
| Amount per capsule | Not printed (no Supplement Facts panel supplied) |
| Amount used in research | 300 to 600 mg of extract a day for at least 12 weeks in trials |
| Strength of evidence | A meta-analysis of nine trials found it may improve attention speed; NIH's liver database says it is not shown effective for any disease in adequate trials |
| Marketed use | Sold for memory |
| Main caution | Usually mild: nausea, stomach cramps, loose stools. |
Does bacopa help memory? What do the studies say?
It may help a little with attention speed, and the proof is not firm. That is the fair summary of the best pooled review.
A systematic review pooled placebo-controlled trials of standardized bacopa extract lasting at least 12 weeks. Nine studies with 518 people met the rules, and 437 went into the analysis. The authors concluded bacopa may improve cognition, especially attention speed, and that a larger head-to-head trial is needed (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.).
StatPearls adds detail. A pooled look at six studies (at least 12 weeks, 300 to 450 mg of extract) found better free recall of memory, but not other thinking skills. Yet 450 mg a day for 12 weeks in 30 healthy adults showed no significant change in cognitive scores (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri).
LiverTox is blunter. Bacopa is not approved in the United States as therapy for any medical condition, and has not been shown effective for any disease in adequately controlled human trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
Read this as "worth a cautious look," not "works." No trial has tested MemoPryl itself.
| Source | What it found |
|---|---|
| Pooled review, 9 trials (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) | May improve cognition, mainly attention speed; larger trials needed |
| StatPearls summary (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri) | Better free recall in pooled studies; no change in 30 healthy adults |
| LiverTox (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) | Not shown effective for any disease in adequate trials |
How much bacopa did the studies use?
LiverTox gives a typical daily amount of 300 to 600 mg of extract (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). That describes studies and herbal practice, not your bottle.
No amount for bacopa is printed on any image we have. So the gold bar below shows the studied range, and the dashed bar stays empty.
Never guess a dose from a website, this one included. Follow the directions on the bottle you receive.
Trials also ran at least 12 weeks. A week or two tells you very little (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.).
What are the side effects of bacopa?
Usually mild and stomach-related. LiverTox lists abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and headache, and rates bacopa as an unlikely cause of clinically apparent liver injury (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).
StatPearls names more frequent stools, nausea and cramps, and calls it mildly sedating (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). If a capsule makes you drowsy, do not drive until you know how it affects you.
The same source lists cautions with certain medicines and conditions:
- Cholinergic or anticholinergic drugs.
- Thyroid conditions or thyroid medication.
- A slow heartbeat, peptic ulcer disease or asthma.
Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start. Stop and call your doctor if you get a rash, a very slow pulse or any reaction that worries you.

See packsHow does bacopa differ from the other names on the list?
Its side effects are usually mild, and its label proof is still thin.
What helps it
- Several placebo-controlled trials of 12 weeks or more (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.)
- Side effects that are usually minor (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
What holds it back
- No amount printed on any bottle image
- Not approved for any condition (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri) (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri)
- Results differ between studies and between thinking skills
Compare it with the ginkgo scan, where bleeding risk is the main worry, and the St. John's wort scan, where many medicines are affected.
Natural does not guarantee safe (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely). Any herb can interact with something you take.
What should I check before I start?
Check the panel, the Latin name, the amount and your medicine list. Then ask.
Label A says 30 capsules, label B says 60. The bottle that arrives settles which one you hold.
Where do I read about the other five names?
Each ingredient has a scan that follows the same layout. Use them side by side with the full ingredients list.
FAQ01
Quick answers on bacopa and brahmi
Is brahmi the same as Bacopa monnieri?
Usually, yes, but not always. Brahmi is the common name for Bacopa monnieri in Ayurveda. LiverTox warns that brahmi is also used for gotu kola, a different plant. Look for the Latin name on the label to be sure which herb you have.
How long does bacopa take to work?
The trials we cite ran at least 12 weeks, so a few days tells you little. Even then, benefits were small and limited to some skills, such as attention speed or free recall. Keep notes and talk to your doctor if memory worries you.
What are the common bacopa side effects?
Mostly stomach upset. LiverTox lists abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and headache, and StatPearls adds more frequent stools and mild sedation. Stop and call your doctor if a reaction worries you, and report serious problems to FDA.
Does bacopa interact with medicines?
It can. StatPearls lists cautions with cholinergic and anticholinergic drugs and with thyroid medication, and with conditions like a slow heartbeat, peptic ulcer disease and asthma. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask a pharmacist before starting.
Is bacopa better than ginkgo for memory?
The sources do not rank them. Bacopa has some 12-week trials suggesting faster attention, while a large ginkgo trial found no drop in dementia rates. Neither is approved for a medical use, and no trial tested MemoPryl itself.
What dose of bacopa is used in studies?
LiverTox gives 300 to 600 mg of extract a day as typical, and the trials we cite used at least 12 weeks. That is a research range, not advice. No bottle image we have prints a bacopa amount, so follow your bottle.
Can bacopa harm the liver?
Unlikely, according to LiverTox, which rates bacopa category E, an unlikely cause of clinically apparent liver injury. Side effects are usually minor. Still, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or severe stomach pain need a doctor visit right away.
