Supplement Contamination: What Studies Found
Supplement contamination means a product holds ingredients not on the label, often drug ingredients. A review of FDA warnings from 2007 to 2016 found 776 adulterated supplements. Memory products were not listed as a category there. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your pharmacist before you start.

How common is supplement contamination?
The study counted what FDA caught, not what exists. From 2007 to 2016, FDA warnings identified 776 adulterated supplements (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open).
Of those, 353 were sexual enhancement products, 317 were weight loss and 92 were muscle building. 157 products held more than one unapproved ingredient (Tucker 2018, JAMA Netw Open). The page does not list memory or cognitive supplements as a category.
That is useful and limited. It says where FDA found trouble, not that memory capsules are clean. FDA also warns its database covers only a small fraction of contaminated products (FDA, Hidden Ingredients).
| Category | Products |
|---|---|
| Sexual enhancement | 353 |
| Weight loss | 317 |
| Muscle building | 92 |
| Contained more than one unapproved ingredient | 157 |
What are the warning signs on a label or ad?
FDA lists claims that sound too good to be true, "herbal" or "all natural" labels, many rave reviews and "FDA-approved facility" boasts (FDA, Hidden Ingredients).
That last one matters because FDA does not approve manufacturing facilities, or the supplements themselves, before sale (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements).
- Promises that sound like a drug
- No full Supplement Facts panel
- Only glowing reviews, no sources
- Badges with no named certifier
MemoPryl's page lists ten brand badges, including "FDA registered facility". They describe the seller's claims and name no certifier. See what the badges prove.
How can I lower my risk when I buy?
You cannot test a capsule at home, so lower the risk with paperwork. Ask for a lab report tied to your lot number and read the full label.
MemoPryl lists lot references (MP-26/ME-4190 and MP-4190-26-ME). They are seller references, not lab proof, and no lab report is published. Ask for one before you buy.
- Label A“Optimized Memory*”No trial has tested MemoPryl. In the 3,069-person GEM trial, ginkgo did not lower dementia rates versus placebo; NCCIH calls the evidence for most supplements inconclusive. (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA) (NCCIH, Supplements and Cognition)
- Label A“Improves Mental Clarity*”'Improves' is a strong verb for a structure/function claim. Bacopa trials of 12 weeks or more reported faster attention in a meta-analysis, at 300 mg or more of extract, an amount no bottle image prints. (Kongkeaw 2014, Bacopa meta-analys.) (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri)
- Label A“Supports Focus*”St. John's wort is studied for mood, not focus, and glutamine has no memory trial. No bottle image prints an amount of any ingredient. (NCCIH, St. John's Wort in depth) (MSK, Glutamine)
- Label B“Supports Concentration*”Ingredient-level evidence at doses this site cannot see. Health claims generally need randomized human testing of the product itself. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Label B“Supports Brain Energy*”'Brain energy' is not a medical measure. A Cochrane review of acetyl-L-carnitine in dementia found no effect on severity. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Pennisi 2020, ALC in dementia)
- Label B“Supports Productivity*”Productivity is not something supplement trials measure. The FTC says personal stories are never enough to back a health claim. (FTC, Health Products Guidance)
- Both labelsThe FDA asteriskStructure/function wording is allowed with the FDA disclaimer. It is not FDA approval and not a disease claim. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims)
- Badges“Doctor formulated”, “GMP certified”, “FDA registered”No doctor, certifier or audit is named. FDA registers facilities; it does not approve them or the supplement. (FDA, Hidden Ingredients) (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements)
- Bottle30 capsules and Cognitive Support, or 60 capsules and Advanced FormulaThe two bottle images in the brand set disagree. Only the bottle you receive settles it.
Claims as printed on the two bottle images. Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally human trials of the same product (FTC, Health Products Guidance).
Pair that with a pharmacist check, and keep taking your prescribed medicine. See how to verify a lot number.

FAQ01
Quick answers on contamination
Can a supplement contain a drug that is not on the label?
Yes. FDA warns some products hold prescription drug ingredients or banned substances that the label never lists. These cases can cause serious side effects, which is why a full ingredient list and a lab report matter.
Does a lab report guarantee a clean supplement?
No, it only covers the lot tested, and only what the lab looked for. It is still better than nothing. Ask that the report names the lot number on your bottle and the tests run.
Where do I report a contaminated supplement?
Use FDA's Safety Reporting Portal at safetyreporting.hhs.gov. Include the product name, lot number and what happened. Stop using the product first and seek medical advice if you feel unwell.
