Supplements That Increase Bleeding: A Plain List to Review
Supplements that increase bleeding risk include ginkgo biloba and vitamin E, which FDA says can each thin the blood, like warfarin and aspirin. Taking them together may raise the chance of internal bleeding. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Which supplements can thin the blood?
FDA names four that can each thin the blood: ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, and the drugs warfarin and aspirin. Taking them together may increase the risk of internal bleeding or stroke (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements).
This is a review list, not a full catalog. The sources we use document these names; other products may carry risks that no source here covers. If the label lists something you do not know, ask.
| Name | Type | Bleeding note |
|---|---|---|
| Ginkgo biloba | Herbal extract | Can thin the blood |
| Vitamin E | Vitamin | Can thin the blood |
| Warfarin | Prescription | Can thin the blood |
| Aspirin | Over the counter | Can thin the blood |
How strong is the ginkgo bleeding warning?
Strong enough to ask first. NCCIH says ginkgo may increase bleeding risk in people taking anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
MSK lists spontaneous bleeding case reports, including hematomas and cerebral bleeding, and advises a talk with your provider if you take blood thinners (MSK, Ginkgo). Case reports are not proof of how often it happens, but they are why the caution exists.
Ginkgo biloba leaf is one of six names linked to MemoPryl on a sibling pack. It is unconfirmed for your bottle, and no amount is printed on any image we hold.
What should I tell my doctor about bleeding?
Tell them every product that could thin the blood, plus any bruising or bleeding you have noticed. Include aspirin, which many people forget.
Bring the bottle to the visit. A clear photo works too, and the label should show the ingredient list. The images we hold of MemoPryl do not. Tap the spots below to see what the front shows.

Next step: if you take a blood thinner, ask before starting any herbal capsule. See the pharmacist question list.

See packsWhen should I stop and call someone?
Stop the supplement and call your provider if you notice unusual bruising, bleeding that will not stop, black stools or a sudden severe headache. FDA says to stop a product right away after a serious reaction and report it (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).
Never drop a blood thinner on your own. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you add any herb.
Surgery planned? Read the side effects page and tell the surgical team about every supplement.

FAQ01
Quick answers on supplements and bleeding
Does aspirin count as a blood thinner?
FDA lists aspirin among products that can thin the blood, alongside warfarin, ginkgo and vitamin E. Many people take it casually, so mention it to your doctor and pharmacist whenever you discuss a new supplement.
Can a supplement cause easy bruising?
Some can, if they affect the blood. Easy bruising after starting a new capsule is a reason to stop it and call your provider, especially if you also take aspirin or a blood thinner.
Is ginkgo bleeding risk proven?
The evidence is mixed: case reports of bleeding exist, and NCCIH flags a risk with anticoagulants. That is enough for clinicians to advise caution, even though case reports cannot show how common it is.
