Supplement Allergic Reaction: Signs and Next Steps

Quick answer

A supplement allergic reaction is your body reacting badly to an ingredient, and FDA lists allergic reactions among serious reactions to report. Stop the product right away and seek medical advice. Keep taking your prescribed medicine, and call emergency services for trouble breathing or swelling of the face or throat.

What are the signs of a supplement allergic reaction?

Common signs are rash, hives, itching, swelling and stomach upset. Severe ones include trouble breathing and swelling of the face, lips or throat, which are emergencies.

FDA's reporting page lists allergic reactions first among examples of serious reactions, beside heart symptoms, severe gastrointestinal problems, bleeding, jaundice and stroke-like symptoms (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).

Read the table as a triage guide. It does not diagnose.

What should I do first if I react?

Stop the supplement. FDA says to stop using it and seek medical advice after a bad reaction, then report it (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements).

Keep the bottle. Note the date you started, the capsule count and what else you took that day. Do not stop a prescription unless a clinician tells you to.

  1. Stop and get help

Call your provider, or emergency services for severe signs.

  2. Keep the bottle and lot number

They help the clinician and the FDA report.

  3. Report it

Use FDA's Safety Reporting Portal for serious reactions (FDA, Report a Supplement Problem).

What can I check on the label before I take it?

Check for a full ingredient list, an allergen line and warnings. If any is missing, ask the seller before the first capsule.

The MemoPryl images we hold show no Supplement Facts panel, no other ingredients and no warnings. Six names are linked to it on a sibling pack, and they are unconfirmed for your bottle. If you have a known plant or capsule allergy, ask for the full list first.

Tap a number to read that part of the label.

  1. Heading

'COGNITIVE SUPPORT FORMULA*'. The asterisk points to the FDA statement, which is not shown in this image.

  2. Name

MemoPryl with a TM mark, inside a gold-edged panel. No maker line is printed on this version.

  3. Network art

A faint drawing of nodes and links. It is decoration, not an ingredient list.

  4. Claims

'Supports Focus*', 'Optimized Memory*' and 'Improves Mental Clarity*', each with the FDA asterisk.

  5. Product type

'DIETARY SUPPLEMENT'. It is not a drug.

  6. Count

'30 Capsules'. The other bottle image says 60.

Next step: share the list with a pharmacist. See the pharmacist question page.

FAQ01

Quick answers on supplement reactions

How soon after a capsule can an allergy show up?

It varies. Some reactions begin within minutes, others hours later. Note when you took the capsule and when signs began, then tell your clinician. Severe signs like throat swelling or trouble breathing need emergency care at once.

Is a stomach upset the same as an allergy?

Not always. Stomach upset is a common side effect, not necessarily an allergy. An allergy more often adds hives, itching or swelling. Stop the product either way if symptoms bother you, and call your provider.

Where do I report a bad supplement reaction?

Use FDA's Safety Reporting Portal at safetyreporting.hhs.gov for serious reactions. Have the product name, lot number and your dates ready. Reporting helps FDA see patterns that single users cannot.
