Sleep Hygiene for Memory: Seven Small Changes

Quick answer

Sleep hygiene for memory means the small habits that protect seven to nine hours of sleep, because both non-REM and REM sleep help you store memories. Fix your wake time, dim the evening, limit late caffeine, move by day and keep the bedroom for sleep.

Why does sleep matter so much for memory?

Because sleep is when you store what you learned. NIA says both non-REM and REM sleep help you store memories (NIA, Sleep and Older Adults).

The same page lists problems with memory among the effects of poor sleep. Older adults need about the same as other adults: seven to nine hours a night.

Check:

Before you blame your memory, count how many nights this week gave you seven hours. The answer is often fewer than you think.

Which seven changes are worth trying?

Start with the wake time, then the evening light, then caffeine. Each is free and reversible.

Change one a week. Seven at once will not last past Wednesday.

How much does caffeine affect sleep?

It can affect it a lot. FDA says too much caffeine can cause insomnia, jitters and a fast heartbeat, and that tolerance varies (FDA, Caffeine).

FDA gives 400 mg a day as an amount not generally linked with harm for most adults. That is about two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee. People differ, and a late cup can cost sleep even below that figure.

Some focus products contain caffeine. MemoPryl's Supplement Facts panel is not printed on any image we hold, so we cannot say whether it does. Read the bottle you receive.

Can a memory capsule help or hurt my sleep?

It can do either, and we cannot predict which. A supplement that affects alertness may change your night, and amounts for MemoPryl are not printed on any image we hold.

MemoPryl is a capsule for memory, focus and brain energy. One name on a sibling pack, St. John's wort, lists sleepiness as a side effect (MSK, St. John's Wort). The directions are not on our images, so take it only as the bottle says, and not late if the bottle warns against it.

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start. Sleep medicines, antidepressants and St. John's wort can clash (NCCIH, St. John's Wort safety). See the how to use page for the capsule-supply sum.

When is poor sleep a reason to see a doctor?

When it lasts for weeks, or comes with loud snoring, gasping, low mood or daytime sleepiness that affects safety.

Memory trouble that bothers you is also a reason. NIA says any concern about memory is worth raising with a doctor (NIA, Forgetfulness: When to Ask). Bring a one-week sleep log. Our brain fog checklist lists other causes to rule out first.

FAQ01

MemoPryl questions people ask

How many hours of sleep do I need for good memory?

NIA says older adults need about the same as other adults, seven to nine hours a night (NIA, Sleep and Older Adults). Quality matters too, since both non-REM and REM stages help you store memories. Track your own nights for a week.

Does napping help memory?

We found no source on this in our set, so we make no claim. A short nap may refresh you, but a long late nap can delay bedtime. Watch your own sleep log, and ask your doctor if you doze often.

Is sleep hygiene enough if I snore loudly?

Not always. Loud snoring with gasping or heavy daytime sleepiness deserves a doctor's visit. Habits help many people, but a medical cause needs a medical answer. Describe your nights and bring a log.
