What Is L-Glutamine? The Amino Acid Explained
L-glutamine is an amino acid, one of the building blocks of protein. The body makes it, stores it mainly in muscle and lung tissue, and also gets it from food (MSK, Glutamine). As a supplement it is sold in capsules and powders, and it is one of six names tied to MemoPryl.

What is L-glutamine in plain words?
It is an amino acid, a small unit that the body links into proteins.
Memorial Sloan Kettering says the body makes glutamine and stores it mainly in muscle and lung tissue. It also comes from food (MSK, Glutamine). So a healthy diet already supplies some.
The "L" on the front is a chemical form marker. It is the form found in nature. On a label, "L-glutamine" and "glutamine" point to the same thing.
Next step: do not read a familiar name as proof of a benefit. An ingredient being normal in the body says little about what a capsule of it does for memory.
What do glutamine supplements claim?
Mostly muscle, gut and recovery claims. Memory is not a standard one.
MSK states that evidence is lacking to support glutamine supplements for building muscle mass and strength. Its page does not describe glutamine as a memory or cognitive supplement (MSK, Glutamine).
| Topic | Source finding |
|---|---|
| What it is | An amino acid the body makes and stores (MSK, Glutamine) |
| Muscle use | Evidence is lacking for muscle gain (MSK, Glutamine) |
| Memory use | Not described as a cognitive supplement (MSK, Glutamine) |
| Side effects | Swelling, stomach symptoms, headache and fever in some studies (MSK, Glutamine) |
Does glutamine carry any cautions?
Yes. MSK lists swelling in the limbs, stomach symptoms, headache, fever and infections as reactions in some studies, with case reports of liver and kidney injury (MSK, Glutamine).
It may also reduce the ammonia-lowering effect of lactulose, a medicine some people take. If you use lactulose, or have liver or kidney disease, ask a clinician before using any glutamine product.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start a capsule that lists L-glutamine.

See packsIs L-glutamine in MemoPryl?
It is one of six names tied to MemoPryl through a sibling pack. The link is unconfirmed for your bottle, and no amount is printed.
The other five are phosphatidylserine, ginkgo biloba leaf, N-acetyl L-carnitine HCl, St. John's wort and brahmi (Bacopa monnieri). Two bottle photos disagree on wording and capsule count, and neither shows a Supplement Facts panel.

Check your panel for the amino acid and its amount. The ingredients page lists all six names, and the glossary explains label terms.

FAQ01
MemoPryl questions people ask
Is L-glutamine the same as glutamic acid?
No. Glutamine and glutamic acid are two different amino acids, although the body can convert one to the other. Check the label name carefully, since a supplement lists one or the other.
Can I get glutamine from food?
Yes. MSK notes that glutamine can come from food as well as from the body's own production (MSK, Glutamine). Most people with a varied diet get some without a supplement.
Is glutamine a vitamin?
No. It is an amino acid, not a vitamin or mineral. That is why it appears in the protein section of nutrition guides rather than the vitamin lists.
