What Is Ginkgo Biloba? Leaf Extract Explained

Quick answer

What is ginkgo biloba? It is a herbal extract made from the leaves of the ginkgo tree, sold in capsules for memory and thinking. Large trials have not shown it prevents dementia, and it can raise bleeding risk. Check your medicines first.

What is ginkgo biloba, exactly?

Ginkgo biloba is a herbal extract. Makers press it from the leaves of the ginkgo tree and put it in capsules, tablets or teas.

The part that matters is the leaf extract. NCCIH warns that fresh ginkgo seeds are toxic, so seeds are not what supplements should use (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

On a label you may see "ginkgo biloba leaf", "ginkgo leaf extract" or just "ginkgo". All three point at the same plant. Check whether an amount follows the name.

Does ginkgo biloba actually help memory?

Not in the way the label wording suggests. The evidence is mixed and mostly negative for preventing decline.

NCCIH says ginkgo has not been shown to prevent dementia. It also says whether ginkgo helps milder memory trouble is unclear, and whether it improves thinking in healthy people is uncertain (NCCIH, Ginkgo).

A Cochrane review found a pooled effect that leaned heavily on a few studies. When two of them were left out, the result fell to near zero (Cochrane 2009, ginkgo and dementia). That pattern tells you the result was fragile.

The largest trial followed more than 3,000 older adults and found no drop in dementia rates (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA).

What side effects does ginkgo have?

The most common ones are dizziness, stomach upset and headache. The one that needs real care is bleeding.

NCCIH lists dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms and headache for leaf extract, and says ginkgo may add to bleeding risk in people on anticoagulants such as warfarin (NCCIH, Ginkgo). MSK adds case reports of spontaneous bleeding and of seizures in people already prone to them (MSK, Ginkgo).

Surgery or a blood thinner?

Tell your doctor before you start ginkgo. Clinicians often ask people to stop supplements two to three weeks before a procedure (FDA, Mixing Meds and Supplements).

Keep taking any prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start a new supplement.

FAQ01

MemoPryl questions people ask

Is ginkgo biloba a nootropic?

It is often grouped with nootropics, a marketing term for products sold for thinking and focus. The term is not a medical category. Evidence for ginkgo is mixed, so treat the word as a label, not a promise.

What part of the ginkgo tree is used in supplements?

Supplements use the leaf extract. NCCIH warns that fresh ginkgo seeds are toxic, so a product built on seeds is a red flag. Check the label says leaf.

Can I take ginkgo every day?

The sources cited here give no safe daily amount for ginkgo, and they mention dizziness, stomach upset and bleeding risk. Ask your doctor or pharmacist what is right for you, especially if you take other medicine.
