Supplements and Dementia Claims: What Is Allowed to Be Said
Supplements and dementia claims are limited: a supplement label can describe how a product supports normal body structure or function, but it cannot make a disease claim about dementia. Any ad that does is breaking the rules, and you should treat it as a warning.

What can a supplement say about dementia?
Nothing that names the disease as something the product handles. That is a drug claim, and supplements are not approved as drugs.
FDA is not authorized to approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). The law lets makers use structure and function claims instead.
Those claims are not pre-approved. The maker must have evidence the claim is truthful, must notify FDA of the wording, and the label must say FDA has not evaluated it and that the product is not meant to diagnose, treat or guard against any disease (FDA, Structure/Function Claims).
Which words are fine and which are red flags?
Words about supporting normal function are the allowed style. Words about a disease are the warning.
Scan an ad or label against this table. One red phrase is enough to walk away.
| Wording | Type | Read this as |
|---|---|---|
| Supports focus* | Structure and function | Allowed style, not proof |
| Optimized memory* | Structure and function | Allowed style, not proof |
| Stops dementia before it starts | Disease claim | Not allowed; red flag |
| Brings lost memory back | Disease claim | Not allowed; red flag |
| Proven in studies | Evidence claim | Ask for the study; none is published for MemoPryl |
| Approved by doctors | Endorsement claim | Ask who; the doctor-formulated badge names no doctor |
What does the asterisk on a supplement claim mean?
It points to the FDA statement: FDA has not evaluated this claim.
The asterisk is a sign the claim is a structure and function claim. It is a legal marker, not a quality mark.
An asterisk plus a disease word is a mismatch. Walk away.
MemoPryl label A reads Supports Focus*, Optimized Memory* and Improves Mental Clarity*. Label B reads Supports Concentration*, Supports Brain Energy* and Supports Productivity*. Quoted as label wording only. See the disclaimer page.

The large trials we cite found no benefit for dementia prevention from ginkgo.
The GEM trial followed 3,069 adults aged 75 or older for a median of 6.1 years and found no difference in dementia rates between ginkgo and placebo (DeKosky 2008, GEM trial, JAMA). NCCIH says ginkgo has not been shown to prevent dementia (NCCIH, Ginkgo).
The National Academies grouped cognitive training, blood pressure management and physical activity as supported by encouraging although inconclusive evidence (National Academies 2017 report). A bottle is not on that list.

What should I do with a dementia worry?
See a doctor. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, and a worry about memory is a reason to ask (NIA, Forgetfulness: When to Ask).
Evaluation finds treatable causes and gives you a plan. Early mild cognitive impairment can be reevaluated over time (Alz. Assoc., Mild Cognitive Imp.).
A capsule can wait. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you add any supplement.
FAQ01
MemoPryl questions people ask
Can a supplement legally claim to stop Alzheimer's?
No. That is a disease claim, and supplements may not make one. If an ad says so, treat it as a sign of a seller to avoid and consider reporting it.
What does FDA has not evaluated these statements mean?
It means FDA did not review the claim before sale. The maker is responsible for having evidence that the wording is truthful, and for including the statement on the label.
How do I report a misleading supplement ad?
You can report concerns about supplements to FDA, and ad problems to the FTC. Keep a screenshot, the date and the web address so the report is easy to follow.
Is a supplement with an asterisk claim safe to buy?
The asterisk says nothing about safety. Check the Supplement Facts panel, compare ingredients with your medicines and ask a pharmacist first.
