What Is Bacopa Monnieri? Origins and Label Names

Quick answer

Bacopa monnieri is a creeping herb used in Ayurvedic medicine and sold as an extract in over-the-counter products (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). Labels may call it bacopa or brahmi. It is not approved in the United States as therapy for any medical condition, so read it as a supplement ingredient and nothing more.

What is Bacopa monnieri, exactly?

Bacopa monnieri is a herb used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. In the United States it is sold as a dietary supplement extract.

LiverTox describes it as an herbal extract found in over-the-counter products. It also says bacopa is not approved here as therapy for any condition and has not been shown effective for any disease in adequately controlled human trials (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).

That is a plain starting point. Tradition is not a trial. The next question is what the studies of the extract found, and those are covered in a separate post on study lengths.

Why do labels say brahmi?

Brahmi is a common name used for bacopa. It is also used for a different plant, Gotu kola, and the mix-up is real (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri).

That matters when you read a label. "Brahmi" alone does not tell you which plant is inside. The Latin name does.

Names you may see for the herb

Bacopa monnieriThe Latin name; the clearest sign of the right plant
BrahmiAmbiguous; look for the Latin name beside it

Next step

If the label says only "brahmi", ask the seller which plant it means before you buy.

What form does it take in a capsule?

Almost always a dried extract, powdered and packed in a capsule.

LiverTox gives a typical reference amount of 300 to 600 mg of extract a day, with mostly minor side effects such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and headache (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). That is a reference figure from the entry, not a dose for any product.

StatPearls adds that bacopa is mildly sedating and lists cautions with some medicines and with thyroid conditions (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Should I treat bacopa as safe because it is old?

No. Age of use is not a safety test.

LiverTox rates bacopa as an unlikely cause of clinically apparent liver injury (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). That is reassuring but narrow. It does not cover every medicine pairing or every person.

FAQ01

MemoPryl questions people ask

Are brahmi and bacopa one plant or two?

Often, but not always. Brahmi is a common name used for bacopa and also for Gotu kola (LiverTox, Bacopa monnieri). Look for the Latin name, Bacopa monnieri, to be sure which plant a label means.

Is bacopa FDA approved?

No. FDA has not approved bacopa for any medical purpose (StatPearls, Bacopa monnieri). It is sold as a dietary supplement, and FDA does not approve supplements before sale.

What does bacopa taste like?

No source we cite describes its taste. Capsules sidestep the question. Whatever the form, read the label as closely.
